Gracious Heavenly Father. We give you glory. This is the day that you have made. So let us rejoice and be glad in it. Thank you for Christ, our Lord and Savior. Thank you for the Holy Spirit. Leads us to Thank you for your church. Thank you for this church. you Be with Clear Note Church. Be with her leadership. and every precious soul here i pray that everyone's hope here will be in christ be with pastor abbasara and his family bless them encourage and strengthen them father give wisdom for the future Install.

the right shepherd for your glory. Father, we pray that as we turn to your word now, that we, as John the Baptist, that we would all decrease. that Christ would increase. Advance your kingdom. Having us all here, we will be in Exodus this morning. Thank you. Some of you, perhaps a lot or most of you don't know me. you And that's good because that means. that the good Lord has been building a beautiful thing here. Make no mistake, God is building something beautiful here. He already has. Some of you know me a little, and some of you know me quite well, and that final group is the group I pity most of all.

But please bear with a little foolishness. Dear, this is going to go on. Her blood pressure rises when I go off script. So this time I put it all in the script. Please bear with me with a little foolishness. If the Apostle Paul can have some autobiography, then I'm going to take a little liberty. Just bear with me for some minutes here. I pray this helps the actual sermon and text, scripture text.

I'm Hoosier born. Jessica and I were born in Fort Wayne. I'm Hoosier. You know where you are in life when you say, I'm from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Oh, I drove through Fort Wayne one time. Both raised in non-Christian homes, not knocking our fathers and mothers, just a typical secular American home. But we were exposed to the gospel and to church quite a bit. So thanks, Mom. Thanks, Dad, for bringing us to church.

Tanya Miller, Good News Club and Public School. We were exposed to the gospel. We both became Christians, Jessica and I, in high school, now more than 20 years ago, more than half-life ago. Thank you. But think of the prophet Ezekiel and the vision of the dry bones. We were spiritually dead, Jessica and I. And the Lord took that which was dead and made it alive. It was a miracle.

Praise God. That's right. Thanks be to God. *Crow* Graduated high school 2004. I went down to Indiana University, Hoosier. Jessica stayed in Fort Wayne, IPFW. She has a Purdue degree. Boilermaker? No. Not knocking on the boilermakers. I'm a Hoosier. Another funny detail. I actually applied. This is my hat tip to Purdue. I applied to Purdue's School of Engineering and they declined me. So... I'm proud of our Hoosiers, by the way, last season, Coach Cignetti and the leadership.

I think we went from the losingest team in the FBS to champions. It's amazing what you can do with a good leader and with a good relationship. I'm proud of our guys. But I can only be so proud of IU because Indiana University Bloomington is one of the most wicked institutions spiritually and morally in our entire union. Between their Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction—yikes— And their religious studies department, which hates Jesus Christ with a virulent hatred, says, Besides Bloomington being the sodomite Mecca of the Midwest, I'm a Hoosier fan, sure.

But you can love an institution only so much when it is so grossly and proudly opposed to our Lord. I love John. You guys have such a gift in this guy. So I was in Bloomington in 2006. My sister was in a ballroom dancing class with the now Dr. Abram Hess. Is this right? Swahili, excuse me. Were you in a ballroom dancing class? My sister surely was in a dancing class.

Swahili, excuse me. But that's a nice image. Abram, ballroom dancing. So my dear sis... said, come meet this weird man who talks about authority and submission. And I, something like that. It was really Sis who introduced me to these beautiful, crazy people. So, for the record. There was something about Abram that interested me. Let's just say... He did not speak as a femme soy boy. And I appreciated that.

Abram invited me to move into the house of Bob Kaplowitz, the late and magnificently great one of a kind Bob Kaplowitz. Messianic Jew with cerebral palsy, for those who don't know, God rest that dear man's dear soul. I'll cry throughout this and that's okay. Church of the Good Shepherd, which became Clear Note Church. And is now Trinity Reformed. It was there from 06 to 08 that I really became alive in Christ.

Godly people and families, men who were real men who really loved Jesus. Remember that little shop by Kroger over there on the east side for men's ministry? And the Lord began to forge me from being an aimless boy into a slightly worthwhile young man. In summer of 07, back in Fort Wayne, I realized I need to get while the getting is good. Summer of 07, I went back to Fort Wayne, proposed to my Jessica before our senior year of college.

And after graduating, I moved back to Fort Wayne. We were married the summer of 08, and we began our lives together. And I would say I became a man the day I was married and took on true responsibility for another soul. So now Jessica has been blessed with more than 18 blissful years to this guy. As you can all tell by now, please pray for Jessica and my kids.

December of 08, we found out that our firstborn, Jessica, Our Adelie. you who ain't a little baby no more, was on the way. In 09, we moved to B-Town so that I could join what was then Clearnoat Pastors College, but is now New Geneva Academy. And for the sake of my timeline, I saw on the website, I looked up articles of incorporation. For the sake of timeline, in the summer of 10, this church, Clearnoat Church, was planted.

getting there. In B-Town, our second born, Moses, came into the world and I graduated Pastors College in 12 and we moved buying our first home here in Indianapolis on the southeast side. We moved here with another family, the Bakers, to plant Christ the King Church. Our third born, Seidel, was born back in Bloomington, although we lived in Indy, because of a beloved doctor, Dr. Laban, who had helped Jess and I with the first two.

During that time, we moved Jessica's mama to a nearby apartment in Indianapolis. And in 13, I decided to move mama into our home after a year of her being in an apartment. Two months later, our fourth, Max, arrived, our only child born here in this city in Indy. And for a time, Mama worked at George Electric for our very own Dan George. They got along famously. And if there is any man in this room who I am sure I am cut from the same cloth or or or whatever we're cut from, Dan, I'm sure Dan and I are cut from it.

Wendy, Jessica, please keep praying. Christ the King church plant failed. The church plant that I had helped begin. We tried. It failed. We came. We strove. We failed. Those precious souls who remained, I helped fold into Neighborhood Fellowship Church. You may remember the late, great, magnificent, one-of-a-kind Pastor Jim Striedelmeier right here on the east side of Indianapolis. God rest his dear soul. We should really visit them.

Jessica. In 2014, Pastor Joseph Bailey, some or most or all of you may know, was getting the call away from our beloved Clearnoat Church, and Pastor David Abisara was getting the call to be the senior pastor here. So the Baileys asked Jessica and I if we would join them in planting Christ Church in Cincinnati. Jessica did not want to leave our Hoosier state. Who can blame her?

We have the best people here. In 15, we sold our first home and moved, buying our second home on the southeast side of Cincinnati. Thank you. So now we're in enemy territory, Buckeye territory, but make no mistake, we're still Hoosiers. Did you know that there was not a single Buckeye who raised the championship trophy this last season? It was only Hoosiers. In Cincinnati, if I gave that, I would hear groans and laughter.

Thank you. That same year in 15, our fifth born, Gwen, arrived. In 17, our sixth born, Titus, arrived. The next year, in 18, our seventh, Abel, arrived. And now by this point, as you can imagine, I had already checked out mentally. But that is when the good Lord in his infinite wisdom truly began to forge me into who I am today. It can be good and or bad to have a favorite child.

It's not necessarily that Abel's my favorite. It's just that he's my favorite. He's special. Halfway through pregnancy, our Abel Warrior Belcher was diagnosed with HLHS, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which meant that if he was going to survive, then he needed to undergo three open heart surgeries. One at three days old, then three months old, then three years old. and praise God, he's here. He's eight years old, and Abel is just as delightful and cantankerous and hilarious an ornery as any eight-year-old you've ever met.

And you can judge me for that favorite child thing. But you have a child born with half a heart and suffer through that, through open-heart surgeries, and then judge me. COVID changed the world. Our country changed. Christchurch, Cincinnati moved locations from the east side, Milford area, up northeast. Now we meet at Mars Hill Academy in Mason, where I'm also facilities manager. Friends started to move up northeast.

Others nearby us on the southeast side moved. Our beloved eighth child, Rose, was gifted to us in 2021. you We felt somewhat alone, Jessica more than me. I've been a bivocational pastor since being ordained in January of 13, as Pastor Bierbauer said. We were working diligently and I was beyond exhausted, already burned out. you The good Lord made a way in 2022. We sold our Southeast Cincy home and bought our current home on the northeast side during those months leading up to the sale by and the months afterward.

I essentially lost my mind. I was recruited, hired to be the facilities manager of Mars Hill Academy, a commercial building which was approaching 20 years old and facing problems and needed upgrades on every major mechanical system. Work that I was completely unprepared for. We had 11 souls under my care, under my roof. I sold and bought non-contingent. If you sold and bought a home, you know the pressure.

So I had to make everything perfect with the sale. So I was extremely sleep deprived for the better part of eight months, again, leading up to the sale by. But then it just went on even after we moved. At the same time, confession, I began to drink alcohol heavily and regularly. I had been drinking before that, but at that point it became normal. more severe. And. Drinking alcohol, my conviction, is not a sin.

Scripture has pages and pages of verses about alcohol. I will warn you. that if you think alcohol is a friend, alcohol is more of a friend with a knife. So let me warn old and young. So that purchase, that home purchase in December of 2022, for the first time in my life, I fell into severe depression. you And for three years, I went through an absolutely wild back and forth, manic depressive, up and down roller coaster.

The good Lord crushed and devastated me. I despaired of life. countless times. Jessica Lynn, my precious angel, tenderly loved me and faithfully carried out her wedding vows through health and now real sickness. Thank you, my dear, for everything and all thanks be to God. And now here we are. today. It is often, friends, through the excruciatingly painful trials when God really teaches us, because then we're paying attention.

You can only learn so much from reading a book about not placing your hand on a hot stove. But if you were to place your hand on a scalding stove, and see and hear and smell your flesh burning, you're going to learn a lesson. You're only going to do that once, hopefully. Depends on how hard-headed you are as well. And so through all that, my victories, my sins, strengths, weaknesses, the Lord has taught me countless things.

Eventually, I'd like to write a book, something to the effect of the impact of a father or the impact of a man. Because as you get older, you see the glorious things a man can build. the countless lives he can beautifully impact. And on the other hand, the absolute destruction that a man's sins can bring to bear on countless people. We all have delusions of grandeur as individuals and as institutions.

the good Lord sees to it that we will get humbled because we basically never sign up to get humbled. We don't ask for it. So the good Lord generally forces humility onto us. If you've ever been a Christian for any length of time, you know, there's a prayer that you cannot pray. Don't ever pray. I'm not praying it. Lord, humble me. You can't pray that. It's too scary.

Too risky, too dangerous. Saxon White Kessinger wrote The Indispensable Man. Sometime when you're feeling important, sometime when your ego's in bloom, sometime when you take it for granted, you're the best qualified in the room. Sometime when you feel that you're going would leave an unfillable hole. Just follow these simple instructions and see how they humble your soul. Take a bucket. and fill it with water, put your hand in it up to the wrist, pull it out, and the hole that's remaining is a measure of how much you'll be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter. You may stir up the water galore, but stop, and you'll find that in no time it looks quite the same as before. The moral of this quaint example is to do just the best that you can, be proud of yourself, but remember, there is no indispensable man. Except for Christ. And now we arrive to our text. Please turn with me or follow.

Exodus 34. For the remainder of this year in 26, and as we anticipate, 27. What are you resolved for your life to be like? What sins are you repenting of? What temptations are you saying no to? Where is Christ reigning and ruling in your life? And where in your life does the Holy Spirit need to shine his light of the word more brightly still? God is calling you to repentance and he's calling you to repentance right now.

Now, the gospel call is clear. God is perfectly holy. You are a wretched sinner, so repent. Leave your sins behind. Run to Christ. Ask him to save your soul. He is ready to save. He is mighty to save. If we are going to be faithful Christians this year, and if we're going to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to those God has placed in our lives... We need to know the God whom we serve.

The Lord has given you unity as a church. He's given you fellowship, trust and love among one another. through glorious and difficult times, you That's all good. You have healthy soil in which to grow right here at Clear Note Church. Bye. In this world, you will not naturally find that fellowship, trust, and love. Certainly not apart from Christ. Because this world hates Jesus. In this world, you will find hostility, coldness, hatred, and cruelty.

But we as Christians, as his church, we have this great treasure. We have the Lord. And he is pleased to make himself known and to make his light shine here. and shine through us as we go from here back out into the world the shining lights for christ Because of who he is. So who is the Lord? Let's keep first things first. Who is the Lord and how does he describe himself?

The context in this passage, the Lord is giving his people law and order. You can hear and feel the thunder. At Mount Sinai, God speaks with Moses, the Ten Commandments, along with many other laws. instructions for the tabernacle and for the priests and then the people sin as they make and worship a golden calf and the first tablets are broken Moses saw their sin, became furious, threw the tablets, shattered them at the foot of the mountain.

Then he took the calf which they had made, and he took it, and he took it, and he took it, and he took it. Remember what Moses did? He burned the calf with fire, ground it to powder, scattered it over the surface of the water and burned. May the sons of Israel drink it. So? I don't know what disciplinary measures you've endured in your days, but Otherwise, what disciplinary measures you yourself have implemented.

Believe me, the people got what was coming to them. you You like this golden calf, idol? I'll give it to you in spades. You don't like this manna I've miraculously fed to you? I'll give you quail for an entire month so that it comes out of your nostrils. That's our loving Heavenly Father. In our postmodern tenderness, we may not always agree with the techniques. But make no mistake, perfect, loving Heavenly Father.

So Moses meets with the Lord and new tablets of stone are made and the covenant is renewed. Moses asked to see God's glory. That's a tall order. And the Lord said, And here is how the text reads. If you will now please stand for the reading of God's word. Exodus 34, 6 and 7. Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness and truth, who keeps loving kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin.

By no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations. This is the word of the Lord. Thank you, God. Beautiful. Please be seated. Moses then did the right thing. And he made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship. That's the only proper response at that point. Moses said, If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go along in our midst, even though the people are so obstinate, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as your own possession.

Thank you. Moses was literally floored. Surely the Lord spoke with his servant Moses in a unique way. Hello. Moses. We have a Moses. I asked Pastor Max Carell, Jessica and I were considering naming him Moses. I just said, I don't know if I'm allowed to. It's Moses. To which, as only Pastor Carell can, said, well, it's fine. You're certainly allowed to call him. You're certainly permitted to name your son Moses, Paul.

The only thing is, all the Moses that I know are all black men. born, Pastor Max was visiting us and said, I wonder when he's going to change color. Moses was unique. By this term, goodness is meant all of God's character, his nature, along with the proclamation of God. No doubt of God's name and the name of God includes his nature, his character, his person, doctrine and standards of living.

Of course, Moses was not allowed or permitted to see the Lord's face because no man may see him and live. Moses essentially saw the after effects of his radiant glory, which had just passed by. The Lord discloses himself by first repeating his name for emphasis. In his name, we see God's strength, his eternity. His infinite power. The Lord is speaking. The one, the true, the unchangeable God.

It's not you and I. Not the creation. This is Jehovah Elah. The almighty, the all-powerful, the awesome one. Now pay attention to him. He is the compassionate and gracious God. He shows unmerited, unearned favor on those who have no claim on it whatsoever. Thank you. you he is not only forgiving, he is ready and disposed to show you his grace. Bye. Bye. you He patiently waits for those who have sinned.

Repent. you you that is what it means by he is slow to anger. almost as if he would not be so severe. If our great wickedness did not compel him. you you And we as Christians, we take it for granted. We presume on his grace. the Father's here among us. We love and trust our fathers most when their words and lives are like God is described here.

Nobody here wants their dad to act the opposite of this. No one introduces their dad, I'm proud of him, he's cruel, he's heartless, he's brutal, he's unsympathetic, he's ruthless. Pitiless, merciless, quick-tempered, distant, uncaring, false, lying, punitive, vindictive, wicked. No one would be proud of that in their father. We love fathers who demonstrate great compassion or mercy and truth. Thank you. all of which flows from our perfect heavenly Father.

And these, mercy and truth, are the confidence of we his people. We pray for God's mercy, which he offers to us freely and constantly in Christ. At the same time, we rest securely on his faithfulness and the certainty of his promises always. which we have in Christ. The Lord is always good. There is never a time when he's not. He is always true. His goodness and truth are inseparable and constant.

God's mercy, like all his attributes, we cannot fully comprehend. And so he gives us his word so that we can know his promises. Thank you. Thank you. Psalm 30, sing praise to the Lord, you his godly ones, and give thanks to his holy name for his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.

Thank you. So wait, are you saying that God will forgive all of my sins? Yes. Even if I sin against him a hundred times? Yes. will God forgive all my sins even if I sin 100 million times, and even if I sin really, really badly? Yes, Christ will forgive you. God's mercy is enough for all of your sins. And for all of the sins for all of His people for all of eternity.

you But I'm afraid that we presume on his compassion. We take for granted that the one true God, the perfect sinless one, always We're not amazed that he forgives sins. Because we want to bring him down and we want to puff ourselves up. We minimize our sins and our treachery. Bye. It is too daunting and too painful to face and realize how truly fallen and depraved we really are in light of his perfect holiness.

um An attributed quote, in the beginning God made man in his image, and man has been returning the favor ever since. I'm now 40 years old and I've realized a couple things. I've told some of you recently. So young ones, take particular note. There will never come a time when you are not tempted to blame your failures and shortcomings on somebody else. You're in some kind of difficulty or trouble.

Quick, find somebody to blame. That's our tendency. Think of the prophet Nathan as he rebukes David. From 2 Samuel. There were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a great many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb, which he bought and nourished, and it grew up together with him and his children.

It would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom and was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him. Rather, he took the poor man's ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.

Then David's anger burned greatly against the man and said to Nathan, As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die. He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and had no compassion. That's true, David. That is true. The sentence is right. Nathan then said to David, you are the man. Thank you. Picture it. Picture the prophet Nathan.

Some of you are prophets or you're called to be prophets. You are the man. Thank you. you Thus says the Lord God of Israel, it is I who anointed you king over Israel, and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. David was forced to face the facts. He was forced to be honest about who he was and what he had actually done. And God bless Nathan.

He wisely brought it all to bear on David's conscience. He dresses David down, as it were. Now, King David. King David... Now, thank you. Note his response. Thank you. Nathan then said to David, you Thank you. Nathan then said to David, You are the man, thus says the Lord God of Israel. It is I who anointed you king over Israel, and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul.

I also gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these. Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in his sight? sword have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.

Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. Thus says the Lord, behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household. I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. Indeed, you did it But I will do this thing before all Israel and under the sun.

Then David said to Nathan, you I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David, the Lord also has taken away your sin. You shall not die. However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die. David confessed his sins and failures and the Lord forgave him. And yet there were tragic consequences.

Let's have a church where we are committed to not keeping a perfect record of the ways others have sinned against me. That's not the point. you David writes, against you, Lord, you only I have sinned and done what is evil in your sight. That passage actually has never quite settled well with me. I think Bathsheba and Uriah would maybe have something to say about that. But there it is.

at the end of the day, it is against the Lord whom we have sinned. It is the Lord with whom we have to do things. um Thank you. Another thing I've realized, there is a certain percentage of us who enjoy being told what to do. The percentage of us who enjoy being told what to do is precisely 0%. Nobody likes to be told what to do, ever.

you And at times I'm the worst offender here. Seriously. Our pride knows no bounds. It is... Mind numbingly frustrating to everyone else. In his kindness, the Lord has placed many good authorities in our lives for our benefit. Of course, earthly authorities, they'll never be perfect. Those in charge over you, they're going to fail. They're going to sin. That's baked in. But when that happens, don't be conceited.

Don't fool yourself into thinking over the long run that you've done any better. I've told some of my kids when they were being difficult and when I was being difficult, I'll take the blame. I've looked at them directly and said, I hope you have a child exactly like you. Not my brightest shining dad moment. It gets the point across. All of your days, you're going to have someone telling you what to do.

Accept it. At the end of the day, authority flows from your perfect authority, your heavenly father. You own a business or run a practice. You got customers telling you what to do. or the government. All authority flows from our perfect Heavenly Father and He always wields His authority perfectly and for your good. Now some scripture passages. I believe Baker guys, I believe Dad calls it the Baker Bible Bomb.

This would be Belcher Bible Bomb. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people. He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation. Just some promises to end here, friends. The Lord takes pleasure in his people. He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation. Is there anything that a doting wife and mother wants to see more than that? Or that children want to expect from their father more? Numbers.

The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression. but he will by no means clear the guilty. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations.

Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your loving kindness, just as you also have forgiven this people from Egypt even until now. Please do not take God's grace, his mercy, his compassion and forgiveness. Never take all of this as a license for sin. the Apostle Paul is very clear about this. He adds the warning for those who remain in their guilt, for those who are stiff-necked, stiff-necked and who refuse to repent of their sin, those who refuse to turn to the Lord, stubborn as a mule.

Those who are pig-headed and bull-headed and obstinate, you know who you are. stubbornly refusing to change your opinion, your course of action, despising those who are attempting to persuade you to obey. hello Deuteronomy, for the Lord your God is a compassionate God. He will not fail you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant with your fathers which he swore to them. God is not fickle like us.

We change all the time. He never does. We fail on our promises. He is always true to His. Nehemiah, they refused to listen and did not remember your wondrous deeds which you had performed among them. So they became stubborn and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness.

And you did not forsake them. But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and truth. Psalm 103, Spurgeon has commentaries on the Psalms, and he says Psalm 103 is just about one of the crowns of all of the Psalms. A Psalm of David, bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of his benefits. Who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit. compassion who satisfies your years with good things. So that your youth is renewed like the eagle. The Lord performs righteous deeds and judgments for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the sons of Israel.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness. He will not always strive with us, nor will he keep his anger forever.
