So what's the point?

David was a great king, known not only for having a heart after God, but also for being a valiant man of war. He knew that following God meant he had enemies to fight. But David wasn’t a lone ranger like the heroes portrayed in movies today. He surrounded himself with courageous men who were motivated to fight at his side in battle. These were his fellow warriors; these were David’s Mighty Men.

Knowing the battle before us today, we understand the necessity of preparing men who will be ready and able to fight. This is the purpose of David’s Mighty Men. Each Wednesday evening at 7 PM, a group of men gathers to learn how to teach, nurture, protect and rule in order to bring honor to Jesus Christ. Each of the lessons is designed to equip men to fulfill their duties in their homes, churches and communities. Over a one-year curriculum, men learn about each of these responsibilities for an entire quarter. The quarter on teaching includes topics such as "Teaching is leadership," "Fear the Lord," "Learn to think," "Know the evils of our day," and "Teach your wife." After the lesson, there is a time for questions and answers, and then we break into smaller groups for further discussion and accountability.

Today, when real men are looked down on, and so many of us are fatherless, the need for this sort of training is tremendous. By the grace of God, this material has been used in another church to teach many men what it really means to be a man as God intended. Besides the Sunday service, this hour really is the most essential meeting for men during the week.
