A Cultural Heritage Worth Protecting...

What are you? A country girl? A city boy? An Ethiopian? A lesbian? A hunter? A sports fanatic? What are you?

Today we are obsessed with identity. We want to know who we are. We feel lost in this fast-paced world that is constantly changing around us. Things that used to feel stable are quickly disappearing, and we no longer expect to grow up and live our lives in a stable community where everybody knows everybody else and their grandma. We've become transient.

So we have begun to desire to hold on to our cultural heritage. If you move from one city to another, how are you going to ground yourself? What will happen if the things that made you who you are get lost in the shuffle? You might cease to exist, becoming some mindless entity like a million others, with nothing unique and special about you.

So what are you? A friend of mine was a baseball fanatic. It was the basis of his relationship with his father. It was his cultural heritage. Baseball defined him. Then he became a Christian, and he underwent a transformation. No longer was he a baseball fanatic. He gave it up in order follow Jesus. This is the meaning of Colossians 3:9-11, which says "you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him--a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all."

Your old cultural heritage is less than useless. I'm not being harsh. According to God, "All Cretans are liars." Is that a cultural heritage worth protecting? Some cultures promote lying, others drunkenness, sexual immorality, violence, theft or covetousness. What does yours promote? It is time for you to lay aside your heritage together with its evil practices and make Christ your all in all. At that point you will receive a new heritage. No, you won't suddenly start dressing in a suit, listening to classical music and singing 4-part harmony. You'll become a Christian, not a WASP. Hicks don't turn into city-slickers when they abandon their culture for Christ. They turn into Christians. Jews don't become Greeks. Slaves don't become freemen. Philosophers don't become anti-intellectuals. Those are all human cultures. Instead you become nothing but a follower of Christ.

What are you? Don't you think it's time to become something worth being?
